In this course, I’ll be sharing my years of experience and unique techniques that bring horses to life on canvas.
In case we have never met - let me introduce myself - I’m a realist artist, working mostly in oils (or sometimes charcoal). I’m a New Zealander but have been living in the UK since 1993.
Although I’m happy to paint anything with a soul, I return time and time again to painting horses. Apart from a love affair with these wonderful creatures, I have developed an endless fascination with the sublime beauty and softness of their coat, hiding a muscular and skeletal structure beneath that is capable of enormous power and strength. Capturing this duality is both a passionand a struggle that is likely to last a lifetime!
I am so often asked about my process and in particular, how I achieve such a level of detail in my work without losing that ‘paintlerly’ feel that takes it beyond a photograph into a piece of art. After many requests, I have created a course for you that I hope will answer all your questions and guide your through my process from start to finish.

Workshop dates...
The course will start from the week-beginning 12th August 2024 and run for 7 weeks plus a bonus workshop at the end in the week-beginning 30th September.
I will be in touch with everybody enrolled in the course after booking to establish the best day & time of the week to run the workshop sessions of the course to suit everybody. How it will work:
All you need it is a smartphone, tablet or laptop with internet connection.
Over 6 weekly modules we will cover each step in the process that will take you from blank canvas to a finished piece. There will be exercises to master the techniques and recorded videos showing each step along the way (with lifetime access).
Once a week we will have a live 2-hour online session as a group where you can ask questions, share your progress, watch me demonstrate skills and techniques and also enjoy the social interaction within the group (these sessions will be recorded so that you will never miss a thing!)
You’ll finish with a beautiful piece of completed artwork, along with new skills to move you forward in your art practice and take you to a new level.

Because there is a live workshop element to this course, the pre-recorded videos will be released at relevant times through-out the course. The first set of videos (Module One) will be released on the day of the first live workshop.
This will help you to pace your work and avoid racing ahead. It will also encoursge you to 'do the work' rather than just watch the videos.
To watch the videos or take part in the live workshops, all you need is a device (smartphone, tablet or laptop) with internet connection.
I will send you a list of essential materials (with links to purchase) soon after your enrollment, that you will need to start your painting. I will include basic tools and materials (you may already have many of these) to keep your costs to a minimum - along with some recommendations for higher-quality materials should you wish to obtain these instead.
Yes, once enrolled in the course, you will have access to the community before, during and after the course runs so that you can share your work, ask questions and enjoy the support and interaction with a small group of happy artists! I will also be popping into the community to answer questions and offer advice.
It is unlikely that I will be opening the workshop element of this course again before next year.
I will be accepting a maximum of 10 people onto the course and may split these into 2 smaller groups to ensure individualised attention and a high-quality experience.
